“All the scholarly articles and books on race I had read in a formal class setting over the years became obsolete as I listened to an African American girl’s story about how people compliment her on how “well” she speaks, or how a darker-skinned African American had been told she was “cute for a dark-skinned girl” by other African Americans.”
